A movement art practitioner, movement science researcher and Certified Laban Movement Analyst (CLMA), Rajyashree belongs to a generation of Indian dancers who started studying dance at a time when dance was not yet the norm, shaping the rise and acceptance of the classical idiom. She has moved on to redefine it in changing times and environs from an insightful, sensitive and yet critical stand.
Groomed for stage since early childhood in the dance theatre forms Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi and vocal South Indian classical music (Carnatic) in Bangalore and Chennai, her style of performing and teaching today has been nurtured by several master teachers, guided by scholars, influenced by a 30-year practice of Yoga and enriched through movement studies in the West which include courses in Middendorf Breathing Therapy and certification in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis and Fascia Fitness.
She holds a Bachelors degree in science from Bangalore University, a Masters in Socio-Cultural Studies and a Doctorate on the emotive-kinetic grounding of meaning from the Europa-University Viadrina, Germany.
